WASHINGTON (AP) - John McCain effectively sealed the Republican presidential nomination on Thursday as chief rival Mitt Romney suspended his faltering presidential campaign.

"If I fight on in my campaign, all the way to the convention, I would forestall the launch of a national campaign and make it more likely that Senator Clinton or Obama would win. And in this time of war, I simply cannot let my campaign, be a part of aiding a surrender to terror," Romney will say at the Conservative Political Action Conference in Washington.

"This is not an easy decision for me. I hate to lose. My family, my friends and our supporters... many of you right here in this room... have given a great deal to get me where I have a shot at becoming President. If this were only about me, I would go on. But I entered this race because I love America, and because I love America, I feel I must now stand aside, for our party and for our country," Romney said.

Part 1 of my presidential prediction.

If Hillary gets the nomination we're going to have President McCain

Obama is the dems only hope.

Current prediction is:

McCain/Huckabee

vs.

Clinton/Obama

if Obama gets the nod then I'm not sure who he'd pick for a running mate.

Ron Paul I respect.

Guh. War without end.

Is there anyone on the Republican side other than Ron Paul who wants world peace?

sorry, I'm not giving up on Dr. Paul. $19.8 million in donations in the 4th quarter alone is enough to keep my hope alive.

One of my neighbors just put up a RON PAUL lawn sign. Woot!

Don't underestimate the number of delegates that are showing support for a particular candidate. My instinct tells me that a lot of delegates are going to show their Ron Paul support right when it's needed the most in August.

I sure do hope so, Jackye. That would be awesome.
It's more possible with Romney out - now that there is no comfortable choice for conservatives.

Although Huckabee is clearly fishing for the VP slot, I don't think that McCain will pick him. McCain's strategy is based on attracting moderate/independent voters, and Huckabee would drive a lot of them off. In addition, he would further alienate fiscal conservatives who are already less than pleased with McCain.

I would not be at all surprised if McCain picked Lieberman.

I’m not certain he’ll pick McCain either – but if he wants to consolidate the conservatives he just might – especially with the much stronger than anticipated showing of Huckabee. Alternatively he might pick a republican woman – like a governor – for a running mate. Be very interesting to see. It’ll certainly give me a lot more insight to how he really thinks.
Looks like Texas may be the deciding ground for Clinton. I just don’t see her giving up without a big fight though – even if Barack sweeps Texas.

I was thinking that Obama might pick a woman (but not Hillary) as a running mate, to reach out to Hillary supporters. Sebelius (governor of Kansas) might be a possible choice. On the other hand, he might find that Hillary supporters are more than happy to support him. In any case, I would expect him to pick a governor, to fill in his lack of executive experience.
