From the article:
Mr Yusuf told the programme he felt more bound by the traditional law of his birth than by the laws of his adopted country. "Us Somalis, wherever we are in the world, we have our own law," he said. "It's not sharia, it's not religious - it's just a cultural thing."

all I can say is that, they followed british law, they decided not to press charges. that is their right.
It is a free country after all is it not?
And the fact that they now have to be judged by their family and friends, well I think that will be better justice than they would ever receive under normal british law.

I think you have a problem with this only because you have a big problem with the way sharia treats women, which is a moot point in this case as it has nothing to do with women ginny. I am not defending sharia, I am just saying that people have the right to follow it, so long as it doesn't violate the laws of the country they are in.

so long as they are following british law and not violating any laws why do you object, you say this is vigilantism? how so, does that not mean that you take the law into your own hands and circumvent the justice system? that has not taken place in this case. I know you will be pissed at my view here, but hey like I said, they are well within their right to choose this. Just because you don't like it... well that is what a free society means, you don't have to like it.

I can take a page out of american history here, what about the mormons in utah, they follow their own laws, however they follow the laws of the federal government first. So that after that they are well within their right to do what they want, and follow whatever laws the want after that.
You would be one of the first to defend their right, so what is the difference here.

All I am saying is that so long as they are not breaking any rules who is to say that what they do after that is wrong. That is their perogative. That is their right. To impose your view on them is tantamount to living in a dictatorship. Not that I disagree with alot of your views, on the other hand I agree with alot of them. However you cannot just decide that you are right and they are wrong.
They have rights to disagree and do things differently.
That is the price you pay in a free society, you have to accept that many people will have widely different views and ideas and that you must let them co exist. That is what a free society is about.

-zaphod ( who will probably be banned for my views which contradict you, but who refuses to judge other people. As I am not arrogant enough to think that I know what is right and wrong. Only that I believe some things are wrong and that as long as we obey the laws of the land, I can say nothing more)

Why do you say you will probably be banned... why even bring it up?

It sounds almost like whining in advance, or trying to make groovychk look bad. But the latter is not in your power, for who we ignore is our own personal business and not subject to appeal nor public opinion.

Back when I read slashdot, I'd frequently hear the phrase "I'll probably get modded down for saying this, but..." and the comment would always be modded up. It was the oddest thing. It was also annoying, for the poster would at once sound persecuted but tolerant. I wondered if perhaps the moderators felt pushed to mod the poster up to make up for said persecution. It was one of the reasons I stopped reading it.

Besides, their stories weren't nearly as good as Fark's. :)

Have you been banned before for saying things like this? Why do you believe you will be now? This has been itching my mind for a couple years now.
