MIAMI, March 5 (UPI) -- U.S. gasoline pump prices have jumped about 31 cents a gallon in the past month and the reasons are unclear, AAA said.

It might be because refineries switched to making more-expensive warm-weather fuels from winter-weather fuels, spokesman Geoff Sundstrom in Orlando, Fla., said. But the surge arrived earlier than usual this year, he told The Miami Herald.

Other industry observers point out crude oil prices have risen a couple of dollars a barrel in the past month.

"I'll have to start taking the bus if this continues," Samuel Maldonado told the Herald as he filled his red minivan with $2.61-a-gallon regular gas.

The U.S. unleaded average gasoline price is $2.481 a gallon, AAA said Monday. A month ago it was $2.170 a gallon, AAA said. The year-ago average was $2.284 a gallon.

Record profits. An administration that is directly involved with oil and oil services.
Nothing suspicious here. Move along.

Amen, Ginny. But it still would be nice to contact our state Attorneys General to have them nose around. The last time ours did in CT, prices suddenly dropped off by about 5 to 7 cents.

That's Capitalism for ya! And I say that as a good thing.

If you want alternative fuels to succeed, we need to let the prices escalate to a point at which people are clamoring for another way. When prices hit a point at which people are unwilling or unable to pay, then the alteratives will succeed.

If we keep offering people thesafety net of government, though, it'll never happen.

Oh, and... "as he filled his red minivan"...

...heh. Yeah, because mini-vans are so fuel efficient.

Yeah - I just don't like government officials profiteering. It's a conflict of interests.
I love capitalism - but I am no laissez faire capitalist. People suck too bad for it to work in a civilized society. I'm not willing to let people die and for nations to collapse so that a utopian capitalist system can work.

I could care less about other nations, honestly. As for people, they die regardless of the system. Better they die with free will and due to their own decisions, rather than under the boot of the Bully Collective.

I also have no problem with government official making money on a company, assuming that that money is made without manipulating the system to ensure a favorable outcome.

Then again, a system of pure captialism would not alow that, simply because there would be no power in the government to manipulate the market.
