The Once and Future Republic of Vermont - washingtonpost.com
The winds of secession are blowing in the Green Mountain State.

Vermont was once an independent republic, and it can be one again. We think the time to make that happen is now. Over the past 50 years, the U.S. government has grown too big, too corrupt and too aggressive toward the world, toward its own citizens and toward local democratic institutions. It has abandoned the democratic vision of its founders and eroded Americans’ fundamental freedoms.

Vermont did not join the Union to become part of an empire.

Some of us therefore seek permission to leave.

This will be interesting to follow.

Oh, I must ask my computer to follow this story and let me know if anything more comes of this. It would take years, of course...

This is an entertaining switch from the "South will rise again". My best wishes to these more interesting troublemakers.

I am sure it would be nice for every state to leave the burden of the big bad federal government. The fact is, however, it would still benefit from its military power. While I personally am completely against the grotesque size and power we strive for in our military, I do appreciate the comforts that it leaves us with. The entire continent of America is protected by the military might of the U.S.

Vermont, you are stuck in it with us, for good or for bad. The land you are on wasn't yours in the first place, if anything it belongs to the tribes of Native Americans who were forced off of it. If you don't like the U.S.'s policies then you, as a population are free to go. (an option I am seriously considering myself) but while you are here you need to do your best to change our federal gov.'s policies.

At least when Texas talks about leaving they have a considerable amount of people they've trained in private (and creepy) armies haha!

But wouldn't it be nice if we could stay where we were and the feds left? I mean, they do work for us and all... Well I *was* going to asia, but maybe now I just move to Vermont. Woohoo!

Yes, I'm well aware that 'we' (such that we are) elected them in the first place, but let me have my fun. :)

Oh, and...

Brassica rocks my whole world!!

Now your talkin Kyrie! Maybe we should suggest a bill that every so often, we completely wipe out the federal govt. And everyone has to fight for their jobs again, prove to us that they are worth it. We could send in the Bob's from Office Space.

And, do you mean the plant the falls in the mustard seed family?
