At least she's a female. Which, without a doubt, is a good thing on an almost all male court. We're pretty under-represented there.
Unfortunately it sounds like that may be her only real qualification.

Looks like yet another example of Bush appointing for loyalty rather than qualification.

Speaking as a shameless liberal, I like the choice.

First of all, there was no way we were going to get a progressive judicial nomination out of this White House. No chance. The best we could hope for was a moderate.

Miers is a puzzle because she has no experience as a judge, and she has never tried cases before the Supreme Court. We don't know a lot about what she believes. However, we do know that she is a woman; that she has made donations to Democratic institutions in the past; that she is a person of great intelligence and personal drive.

Personally, given limited information about judicial appointments, I am always happy to see a smart person get the job. With smart people, even if they later turn out to be evil, they will at least be consistently evil. And since I believe that more liberal views are the smarter views, I am biased into thinking that the smart candidate is more like me than not.

We'll see what comes to light in the days ahead. I might change my mind if it turns out that she's the president of the Dwarf-Kicking Club of America or something.

well the jury is still out - and while I agree with you for the most part - i just don't think bush generally capable of making good selections.

bush sucks at making any kind of decisions, and i have hope that both nominees will turn out to be screaming ironies in the long run. part of me thinks that the judiciary is inherintly "left" and as much as the right fights it, the judiciary will always be able to "legislate from the bench."

so in a way, i wonder if bush is sort of doing a c.y.a. in the short run. he knows he can't piss of the left or it'll be a filibuster or worse, the left will shut down the senate if pushed far enough. and, he can't piss off the right no matter what. but i think it's *inevitable* that the right will be pissed off, because judges usually swing left unless they're complete turds like clarence thomas. and by the time the right does get pissed off at bush, bush will be long since gone and it'll be too late... so in way, bush did the only thing he could do. bottom line - he doesn't care about his own party as much as he's supposed to. he's rolling the dice as much as the left is. he's "faith-based" after all, and when in the world does that ever really work out for anybody?

i could be dead wrong though. this could turn out to be real nightmare. in which case the only benefit will be that it'll unfold in slow motion - in enough time to pack up the house and move to canada.

i don't think bush gave it much of what passes for thought in his head. his wife wanted a woman and he figured it was ok since he was replacing sandy. and he knew this chick because she worked for him and stuff. hehe.

i'm certainly hoping for the best. but it is like with most thing for me... i'm just hoping for the best - i expect the worst.

actually it's starting to look bleak already. she's anti-choice from what i read in the denver post. i've changed my mind and now i say filibuster filibuster. if for no reason than bush doesn't have a reason.
